The Idaho Freedom Caucus is making a difference in the Capitol.
Let's talk about two significant victories from last week.
House Joint Memorial 8 - Illegal Immigration
Illegal immigration is a massive problem in the United States. In response to the crisis, Rep. Dale Hawkins and Sen. Glenneda Zuiderveld introduced House Joint Memorial 8 (HJM8) in House State Affairs. This memorial pulls no punches and rightly holds President Biden and the federal government accountable for the invasion at our southern border. It calls on the US House of Representatives to impeach President Biden for the high crime of willfully failing to enforce existing immigration law and sanctioning an invasion of the United States by millions of military-age men. It further states that the priority must be on enforcing immigration laws, securing our borders, and combatting illegal drugs and sex trafficking. Only after impeachment of President Biden and passage of H.R. 2, should Congress contemplate an effective process for the safe processing of immigrants in the United States and Idaho.
During the committee presentation of HJM8, opposition from big corporate agriculture lobbyists and Democrats arose as they attempted to weaken our message. However, IDFC members Rep. Heather Scott and Rep. Joe Alfieri stood firm. Scott confronted industry representatives for admitting to hiring illegal workers, emphasizing it’s time to end such practices. Alfieri underscored the need to maintain the memorial's strength. HJM8 passed out of committee and is headed to the House floor for what's sure to be a showdown between upholding the law and confronting big corporate agriculture interests.
Below is testimony from Bob Naerebout, a lobbyist for the Idaho Dairymen’s Association. He admits that up to 70% of their workforce is comprised of illegal aliens.
Below, Representative Joe Alfieri speaks against sending HJM8 for amendments. He stresses the importance of dealing with illegal immigration as a national security issue.
The Online Child Safety Act
We secured another major win with House Bill 498, The Online Child Safety Act. Sponsored by Sen. Ben Toews and IDFC member Rep. Elaine Price, this bill empowers parents to sue online content providers for exposing their children to pornography if the provider doesn't take reasonable steps to prevent it. It will hold platforms accountable, like regulations for tobacco and alcohol sales to minors, to shield children from harmful content. This protects kids from internet porn without requiring a government filter on your phone.
H498 received unanimous approval in the House and smoothly navigated Senate State Affairs, largely due to Sen. Ben Toews' efforts. Because it is such a strong piece of legislation, we fully expect it to pass through the Senate and reach the governor's desk.
The Idaho Freedom Caucus is leading legislative efforts to protect our nation's borders while also supporting families and children. Your ongoing support is greatly valued!
