Gun Rights are under attack across our nation. Liberals would love nothing more than to disarm the population and push through tyrannical policies. Do not think for one second that this won’t come to Idaho! The assault on our rights has never been so apparent:

• On September 8th, 2023, New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham (D) issued an emergency order suspending the right of law-abiding citizens to open and conceal carry firearms, in direct contradiction and violation of the U.S. Constitution;

• The Democratic Party is publicly pushing to ban “assault rifles,” install a universal background check, limit magazine capacity, enact red flag laws, and implement waiting periods, as well as other gun control initiatives;

• California Governor Gavin Newsom, a potential successor to President Biden, recently visited with the Idaho Democratic Party after publicly announcing he’s proposing a “28^th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution that includes raising the minimum age for buying a firearm to 21, mandating universal background checks, requiring a reasonable waiting period, and banning assault rifle sales”;

• Neighboring Washington State passed legislation banning certain semi-automatic rifles, including A.R. and A.K. style rifles, implementing a 10-day waiting period on firearm purchases, and allowing lawsuits against gun makers or sellers in some instances;

• Several current Idaho Republican legislators demonstrated a willingness to compromise on gun rights, voting for gun confiscation orders (“Red Flag”) in the 2019 Marsy’s Law Constitutional Amendment proposal;

• The Idaho Supreme Court ruled against gun rights by rejecting an appeal regarding Idahoans’ ability to carry firearms at private events on public property;

• The ATF illegally turned millions of law-abiding American citizens into felons overnight with their passage of the pistol brace ban;

• The Idaho Statesmen published an opinion piece admonishing Idaho citizens from open-carrying firearms in the 2023 Boise 4^th of July parade;

• The ATF proposed a rule requiring those who sell firearms online or at gun shows to be federally licensed and to run background checks on buyers before completing transactions, effectively implementing universal background checks.

No gun owner in Idaho should ever be worried that one day they will become a felon overnight because of an arbitrary rule change by the feds.

The Idaho Freedom Caucus is taking the lead to strengthen Idaho as a 2^nd Amendment Sanctuary State. In 2014, we passed Senate Bill 1332, “Idaho Federal Firearm, Magazine and Register Ban Enforcement Act,” which had the intent of protecting “Idaho law enforcement officers from being directed, through federal executive orders, agency orders, statutes, laws, rules, or regulations enacted or promulgated on or after the effective date of this act, to violate their oath of office and Idaho citizens' rights under Section 11, Article I, of the Constitution of the State of Idaho”. Due to recent actions from the federal government, this language must be improved and reinforced:

• Law-abiding Idahoans need assurance they will not be the target of Federal, State, or Local persecution for exercising their 2nd Amendment rights;

• Gun store owners should be allowed to operate without fear of bureaucratic intrusion;

• Gun shows in Idaho should be allowed to do business as usual.

We want to make Idaho the strongest 2A state in the union!  

As legislators, we can make this happen with the help of you and our allies. We will work diligently with experienced groups like the Gun Owners of America, Idaho Second Amendment Alliance, the Idaho GOP, and gun enthusiasts to pass bulletproof legislation.

• Encourage your county to become a 2A Sanctuary County;
