The Idaho Freedom Caucus members are not surprised by recent claims from the Idaho Education Association (IEA) and Idaho Education News (IDED News) labeling the 2025 legislative session the "worst ever" for public schools. Their reasons likely stem from the education victories for parents and homeschoolers. Their planned efforts to target conservative lawmakers for removal in the next election cycle point an ominous finger back at them exposing their myopic view of education, that government-run schools should have total control over student education. We at IFC believe differently.
The Legislature passed House Bill 93, the Parental Choice Tax Credit, providing up to $5,000 in refundable tax credits for non-public school students and up to $7,500 for special needs students, capped at $50 million annually. Additionally, it is worth noting that the entirety of the new $50 million budget comes from the general fund, and none of House Bill 93's funding comes from the existing K-12 budget. This reflects the more conservative legislature’s growing commitment to parental freedom in education.
The IEA and IDED News appear to be mobilizing against conservative legislators, alleging harm to public education despite these balanced reforms. K- 12 spending has increased 106% over the last 10 years while enrollment is down. While specific plans remain unclear, trending discussions suggest the unions may leverage public campaigns and electoral pressure to influence voter sentiment, potentially targeting conservative lawmakers who supported choice initiatives. IFC members know the majority of parents favor strong parental rights and more educational options for their kids.
The IFC stands firm, believing Idaho’s education system benefits from diverse options, and encourages constituents to scrutinize these claims and support leaders who prioritize local control and parental rights in the upcoming elections.
Our members need to be re-elected because there is more reform needed in our upstate schools. Please consider partnering with us and donating to support our caucus.
