The founders of our state believed that only an educated and intelligent people could maintain the stability of our republican form of government. Because of this conviction, they mandated in our constitution that the legislature shall establish and maintain a system of public schools for all children.
I fully support school choice and having tax dollars follow the child.
Our public schools have failed miserably.
I see it in the work place with young people struggling to read or write, which has become more and more important with the changes in the work environment. And many lack even the most rudimentary math skills.
We chose to live well under our means to be able to fund private schools for our two children. And, I am very happy with what we did to provide an excellent education for our children. They both excelled in college because of the education they recieved and are very successful adults because of it.
Our society needs to reverse this education issue to survive.
If government funds are used to pay for schooling outside of the public schools ("private" schooling); then doesn't the government control extend to the private schooling?

It is true that the public schools have produced generations of ignorant Americans. But understand that when "tax dollars" follow the child, so does government control.
